Why do flight prices change so often?

Same flight, same seat, a different price by dinner. It feels random, but there are a few ordinary reasons behind it, and knowing them takes some of the sting out.

One seat, several fare levels

Airlines don't sell a flight at a single price. They sell seats in groups, each with its own fare and conditions, and open or close those groups as a flight fills or as departure gets closer.

Demand and timing

Busy dates, holidays and popular routes tend to cost more. Fares can shift as a flight fills, or when demand is lower than expected.

Competition and sales

Airlines watch each other. A fare on one carrier can move when another matches or undercuts it, or when a sale starts or ends.

Small moves and big moves

Many changes are tiny, a few dollars up and back down, and mean very little. Big drops are rarer, and they don't announce themselves.

What that means for you

Nobody can reliably time these moves for you. The practical answer is to know your budget and be ready when a fare fits it, which is what an automatic tracker is for.
